Software
Software for a Physics-supported workstation
Terminal provided by Physics Computer Services (PCS):
- If you are a G1 or G2 using a Linux terminal supplied by PCS, please *submit a ticket* for any new software you require. Installations are done remotely and a visit to your desk is not necessary. You will receive e-mail confirmation regarding your new help ticket and we will contact you shortly after.
- PC/Mac provided by Physics. Computer Services (PCS):
If you have a PC or Mac installed and supported by PCS or are using a library machines, please *submit a ticket* for any new software you require. Note: If you have administrative rights on the machine in questions, then it is not a PCS computer - see below. You will receive e-mail confirmation regarding your new help ticket and we will contact you shortly after.
Software for your other machines (not Physics supported)
For lab machines, laptops and desktops not supported by Physics Computer Services (PCS), please visit the FAS Software Catalog (select your platform, Linux/Mac/Windows, at top). Here you can download software provided by Harvard FAS for use by FAS faculty, staff and students. Please make certain to install the Keyserver Client from this site for any download which is marked as "keyed". If you have a PCS supported machine, you will not be able to install software from here as you do not have administrative rights on the machine - see above.
Other software: If you do not see the software you require for download, you most probably will need to purchase a license for it (and install media). The most common software packages can be purchased from UIS Technology Services using either a credit card (personal purchases) or a 33 digit biling code (departmental purchases).
Special software we're often asked about:
MikTeX - http://www.miktex.org/
WinEDT - http://www.winedt.com/ (requires license purchase - Harvard does not have blanket license)
GhostScript/GSview - http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/
SSH SecureShell - http://www.ssh.com/
OpenOffice and NeoOffice - http://www.openoffice.org/ and http://www.neooffice.org/
Microsoft products - Purchase license & media from UIS Technology Services.
Please note: Harvard does not have blanket licenses for any Microsoft products (Windows, Office, etc.). Each seat (license) must be purchased separately for each machine it is installed on. Failure to do so is considered piray by Microsoft and puts the University at risk of legal action. The same is true of any commercial software for which the University is not implicity providing a license to you (through keyed software, etc.)
