Outlook Express & Outlook
Un-Supported
PLEASE NOTE: We do not encourage or support the use of Outlook or any of its derivatives. This information is provided only as a courtesy to those who feel a need to use Outlook. Due to inconsistencies in implementation of IMAP and folder storage, attempting to offer support for Outlook is something we cannot offer.
As such, please do not enter tickets seeking help setting up Outlook. The pitfalls are many, the gains are few. We support and recommend Mozilla Thunderbird for any and all users (Mac/Linux/Windows, etc.)
HAVING TROUBLE?: Many users who have bought new machines (does not apply to computers provided by Physics Computer Services) and have Symantec/Norton Internet Security on their machines are unable to send email. This occurs because Symantec/Norton expects to be able to scan each outgoing email but cannot scan encrypted messages. Our outgoing server uses encryption as a part of our effort to maintain security. You may:
- Attempt to turn off this scanning by following the instructions from Symantec:
Article #2003020715374936 - click here - Download McAfee from FAS here. Disconnect from the network. Un-install Norton Internet Security, Norton anti-virus and Live Update, then immediately install McAfee.
One warning, never ever let an Outlook mailboox file (the one stored on your machine) get up near 2 Gigabytes in size. (Outlook keeps a local file in addition to anything stored on the server.) This will render Outlook (or at least that folder) unusable. Also, if your Inbox gets this large, your mail will stop working altogether. And additionally, creating sub-folders on an IMAP server is hit and miss for some people using Outlook (some succeed, some always fail - it varies by installation). Just so you're aware. In programming terms, this is the "death of a thousand cuts" gambit... and that's all I'm going to say about that.
So you want to continue, eh? OK...
Outlook Express and Outlook are very similar, so this page just goes over the settings for Outlook Express.
From the "Tools" menu choose "Accounts" then click on the "Mail" tab to get the following:

Click on "Add" and choose an email account. This takes you to the Wizard (clearly Saruman, not Gandalf) where you can enter your name

your email address

configure the incoming (IMAP) and outgoing servers

your username and password

Then you can click "Finish" on the summary dialog, but you are not finished. Next, select the newly created account from the list on the mail accounts dialog box and click on "Properties"

On the "Servers" tab under "Outgoing Mail Server", click on the checkbox next to "My server requires authentication". On the "IMAP" tab

put "mail" in the "Root folder path" (this is really important - don't skip it) and click off the checkbox "Check for new messages in all folders". Finally, on the "Advanced" tab

Click on the two checkboxes that read "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)". And that should do it.
