Due to some changes in Mac OSX 10.4, connecting to a Samba/Windows print resource isn't as simple as in previous versions. WIth 10.5 this has changed yet again. Instructions for 10.4 and 10.5 are shown below.
To connect to a Physics printer from your Mac (except those Macs which we have directly supplied to you or which we maintain) do the following:
- From System Preferences, select "Print & Fax"
- Click the + sign to add a printer
- 10.4 - While holding down the Option key, click "More Printers..."
- 10.4 - Select "Advanced" from the drop-dwon menu
- 10.4 - Select "Windows Printer via SAMBA" in the "Device" menu
- 10.5 - Right-click (ctrl-click) on any icon in the top of the window that opens
- 10.5 - Select "Customize toolbar" from the menu that pops up
- 10.5 - Drag the 'Advanced' icon onto the icon toolbar and click 'Done'
- 10.5 - Click the Advanced icon
- 10.5 - Select "Windows" in the "Type" menu
- For "Device Name" enter a name to identify the printer
- For "Device URI" or "URL" enter: smb://username:password@physics.harvard.edu/printername
(where "username" is your username and "password" is your Physics "Samba/Windows" password and where "printername" is the printer you are connecting to [example: white-elephant]) - Example: smb://jsmith:Ss12$RMY9@physics.harvard.edu/library-color
(your password will not be visible after it's entered here) - Select the printer model (if not found, try 'Generic' but you will need to install a driver for any color or special printers)
- Click "Add"
