LDAP directory settings

If you wish to set up your e-mail client to use the Physics and/or Harvard LDAP directories to find e-mail addresses, here are the settings you'll need:

For the Harvard Directory:

  1. Name: Harvard Directory
  2. Server: phonebook.harvard.edu
  3. Search Base: o=Harvard University, c=US

For the Physics Directory:

  1. Name: Physics Directory
  2. Server: physics.harvard.edu
  3. Search Base: ou=users,dc=physics,dc=harvard,dc=edu

Adding a directory in Thunderbird

To add a directory in Thunderbird, select 'Preferences'
(The appearance of the windows may differ between MacOSX, Windows and Linux, but the options are the same for all platforms.)

Select 'Composition' and then click the 'Addressing' tab. Click 'Edit directories' to add a directory.

Click 'Add'

Enter the directory info (as shown at top of this page). Click 'OK'.
It's recommended that you use the Harvard Phonebook unless you want to limit your searches to only the physics directory.

Click 'OK'.

All done. Close the Preferences window.

Now when addressing a new message, you will receive suggestions to pick from (after 2 or 3 letters are typed).
Also, you will also find the directory is now listed for searching if you open the Thunderbird 'Address Book'.
You can search on First Name, Last Name or E-Mail address. Example below:
